Hammond se afla la bordul unei maşini propulsate de un motor cu reacţie şi rula cu aproximativ 300 de mile pe oră (483 km/h) cînd a pierdut controlul bolidului. Accidentul s-a petrecut pe un aerodrom din zona York, circumstanţele exacte în care s-a petrecut nefiind încă cunoscute. BBC, postul la care este difuzată emisiunea Top Gear, a declarat într-un comunicat de presă: “Luăm în considerare toate circumstanţele producerii acestui accident. Ar fi nepotrivit să comentăm mai multe în acest moment, pînă cînd nu ştim ce s-a întîmplat cu exactitate”. ÃŽn încercarea anterioară accidentului, maşina atinsese peste 300 de mile pe oră dar nu sînt sigur dacă depăşise recordul. Au mai încercat o dată şi plănuiau să se oprească cînd maşina a luat-o brusc la dreapta. O paraşută s-a deschis, dar maşina a intrat pe iarbă şi s-a răsturnat de mai multe ori pînă s-a oprit la 90 de metri de noi”, a declarat Ogden. Acesta a mai spus că echipa de salvare şi ambulanţa au intervenit imediat, găsind maşina răsturnată şi “înfiptă” Ã®n iarbă. Ogden a mai declarat că Hammond avea puls şi respira. “ÃŽşi recăpătase cunoştinţa şi a spus că îl durea spatele. Apoi şi-a pierdut din nou cunoştinţa”, a spus Ogden.
